Getting a new tattoo is exciting—but understanding the healing process is just as important as choosing the right design. Proper healing ensures your tattoo looks its best for years to come. That’s why this month, one of your favorite Lynn tattoo shops is here with a breakdown of what you can expect week by week after getting inked.
Week 1: Initial Healing and Tenderness
Right after your session, your artist will clean the area and apply a bandage or wrap. Once you remove it (usually within a few hours), the tattoo may feel sore, warm, or slightly swollen. This is normal.
Wash the tattoo gently with mild soap and lukewarm water, then pat dry with a clean towel. Apply a thin layer of fragrance-free, artist-recommended ointment. Avoid soaking, sweating heavily, or exposing it to sunlight. Scabbing may begin to form during this time.
Week 2: Peeling and Itching
This is when the tattoo might start to look a little scary—but don’t panic. Scabs will begin to flake off, and the area may peel like a sunburn. Itching is common, but scratching can damage the tattoo and cause scarring or color loss.
Keep the area clean and moisturized with a light, unscented lotion. Continue to avoid direct sunlight, swimming, or any activity that could irritate the healing skin.
Week 3: Dull Appearance and Light Flaking
By now, most scabs have fallen off, and the surface layer of skin is healing. Your tattoo might appear cloudy or faded. This is part of the process—the deeper layers of skin are still recovering.
Stick with your gentle cleansing and moisturizing routine. Don’t be alarmed if the tattoo doesn’t look as vibrant just yet. The color will begin to settle and sharpen over the next few weeks.
Week 4 and Beyond: Final Healing Stage
At this stage, your tattoo may feel and look healed, but internal healing can still be happening. The outer layer of skin should be fully closed, and the tattoo will regain much of its original color and detail.
Even after the visible healing is done, it’s a good idea to protect your tattoo from sun exposure. Use sunscreen and keep moisturizing to maintain the longevity of your ink.
